To Kill at 30 Yards

I found this article in the Staffordshire Sentinel, 23 August 1912, page 4.
Herbert Clement Taylor is my 2nd great uncle.
John Herbert Taylor and Mary Ann Hannah Mart are my 2nd great grandparents and Herbert Clement's parents.

There is another article about this, which gives Herbert Clement's address as 25 Adams Street, Milton, I have this address recorded as where they were living when the 1911 census took place.

The transcription reads:
TO KILL AT 30 YARDS
Youth's Foolish Conduct with a Pistol
At Stoke-on-Trent Police Court, before the Potteries Stipendiary (Mr. B.C. Brough), Eustace Smith (15) of Market Street, Milton, was charged with wounding another boy living in Milton named Herbert Clement Taylor.
Taylor said on the morning of July 21 he met Smith carrying a pistol. Defendant fired a shot on the ground and witness asked him if he had a box of caps to discharge. Smith replied, "Wait a minute and I will show you." He walked away, and when twenty or thirty yards distant, turned round, pointed the pistol at witness and fired. The bullet hit him in the leg, and he had to hop to his home.
Inspector Dix said Smith on being charged said he aimed at a wall, and di not intend to hit Taylor. The pistol would kill a man at thirty yards' range.
The Stipendiary said it was fortunate Taylor had not been seriously injured. Defendant would be fined £3 and costs. He did not know if the authorities would take further steps against defendant for carrying a gun without a licence, but he had rendered himself liable to be sent to a place of detention for a considerable time.

Mary Malone (1851-1925)

Mary Malone (1851-1925) is Dermot’s 3rd great grandmother. She was born in Co Kildare to Peter & Unknown Malone.

Dermot is descended through:

* her daughter, Ellen Byrne (1870-1925) who married Richard Boushell (1867-1951)

* their son, Patrick Boushell (1895-1969) who married Helen Clare Egan (1899-1986)

* their daughter, Mary Carmel Boushell (1926-1974) who married Gerald Westhoff (1928-2012)

* Dermot Edward Patrick Westhoff

As is often the case with old records, I have several documents which show a different year of birth for Mary, it could be anything from 1844 to 1851.

1846 from her marriage registration in 1867, (assuming that she was 21 when she married)

1851 from the 1901 census

1844 from the 1911 census

1850 from her death registration

The earliest record I have for Mary is her marriage registration in 1867.

Mary married Thomas Byrne on 19 November 1867 in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Eadestown, Naas, Co Kildare.

Thomas Byrne, bachelor, labourer, living at Athgarrett. Father: Hugh Byrne, labourer

Mary Malone, spinster, living at Athgarrett. Father: Peter Malone, labourer

Witnesses: Michael Green and Kate Maily (the relationship to the couple is not known)

Between October 1868 and March 1876, Mary and Thomas had 5 children, Mary, Ellen, Michael, Patrick and Esther. The birth registrations show that Mary and Thomas remained in Athgarrett during this time. Sometime between the birth of Esther (Essy) in March 1876 and January 1880, they moved to Naas. Mary's last 3 children, Peter, Andrew and Cecilia were all born in Naas, Co Kildare.

In 1901, Mary was living at 1 Oldtown, Nass with her son Andrew and daughter Cecelia. Mary's occupation is given as lodgekeeper.

The 1911 census shows them living at 36 Sallins Road, Naas. It is also recorded on the census that Mary had 8 children, with 7 living and 1 died, this would be either Michael or Patrick, as her other children were all alive in 1911, but I have not been able to find any further information on either of these.

1911 Census
1911 Census

Where were Mary's other children in 1911?

Mary was married and living in Warwickshire, England

Ellen was married and also living in Sallins Road, Naas, Co Kildare

Esther (Essy) was married and living in Dublin

Peter was in Aldershot, Hampshire

Mary remained in Naas, Co Kildare until her death in 1925. She died on 6 November 1925, age 74, the cause of her death is given as senile decay and her death was registered on 9 November 1925 by her son Peter.

Macclesfield: 108 Steps

I saw a picture recently of the 108 steps, which reminded me of Macclesfield and where I grew up. I walked up and down these steps many times.

Here is a view from the top of the 108 steps, which climb from Waters Green to Churchside next to St Michael's Church.

And here are "the boys" in June 2013 standing at the bottom of them
