Will: Mary Caroline (Houghton) Goodwin (1858-1929)

Mary Caroline Houghton (1858-1929) is my 2nd great grandmother.

I am descended through:
  • her daughter, Mary Ellen Goodwin (1883-1955) who married Percy Hooley (1882-1919)
  • their son, Eric Hooley (1908-1992) who married Brenda Meakin (1912-1982)
  • their daughter, Sheila Hooley (1938-….) who married John Stanton Wain (1937-….)
  • Judith Yvonne Wain

The transcription reads:

This is the last and only will of me Mary Caroline Goodwin of No 6 Exchange Street Macclesfield in the County of Chester England. I give abd bequeath all my personal belongings all moneys and household furniture effects absolutely to be equal divided between my daughters Mary Ellen Hooley and Minnie Amelia Hyde and all I possess at my death. And lastly I appoint Mary Ellen Hooley and Minnie Amelia Hyde to be Executors hereof. And I revoke all former Wills made by me in witness whereof I the said Mary Caroline Goodwin have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of July One thousand nine hundred and twenty ninth.
Signed by the said Mary Caroline Goodwin the Testator in the presence of us present at the same time who at her request in her presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses
Jonathan Goodwin, 130 Bond Street, Macclesfield, Mill Foreman
Joseph Hugh Hall, 55 Bond Street, Macclesfield, Plumber

Jonathan Goodwin was George Hedley Goodwin's brother. George Hedley Goodwin was Mary Caroline's husband, he died one year before Mary Caroline in September 1928.

As far as I can tell, Joseph Hugh Hall was not related in any way to Mary Caroline.

Baptism Connections

I thought I would have a look at baptism records and see how they can help within the family tree. This is easiest to do with the Westhoff side, as the baptism records also show who the godparents were. The C of E records tend only to show the name of the parents, they can give other clues, but I will look at some of those another day.

John Jacob and Mary Ann (Mooney) Westhoff are Dermot's 2nd great grandparents and they had 7 children and I have the baptism records for all of them.

1856 John Michael, born 21 January, baptised 6 May
1858 Martin, born 14 June, baptised 1 August
1859 John Augustine, born 5 August, baptised 28 August
1862 Frederick William, born 5 February, baptised 19 February
1864 Henrietta, born 8 July, baptised 9 August
1867 Edward James, born 27 March, baptised 21 April
1869 Henry, born 5 February, baptised 21 February

All of the above records give the name of the mother as Mary Ann Mooney, this is really useful information, as sometimes, this can be difficult to find.

From the dates alone we do not get a lot of information. However, when we look at where the baptisms took place, it tells us when John Jacob and Mary Ann moved to Liverpool. Their first 3 children were all baptised in London, so giving us an indication that between 28 August 1859 and 5 February 1862, they moved to Liverpool.

So, can we get any further information from the godparents?

The godparents of John Michael were John Mooney and Anne Mooney. It is a tantalising clue, as I do not have any records earlier than 1855 for Mary Ann Mooney (marriage record), despite much searching. John and Anne may be brother and sister or a sister in law, so far I have not been able to find them on any records, so I still do not know how or if they were related to Mary Ann.

Martin's godmother was Hanora Murphy and I have not been able to find anything further on her.

John Augustine's godmother was Susan G Egan (name not clear) and again, I haven't been able to find anything on her.

The godmother of Frederick William is Julia Westhoff, she was the wife of Martin Westhoff and they emigrated to America. Martin may have been John Jacob's cousin, although the relationship so far has not been confirmed.

So far, the other godparents have not given any more clues, but it is a good reason to look very carefully at all the records found. When I first started the "Tree" I was only interested in the dates and failed to realise what other gems I was missing. It is a slow job, but I am gradually revisiting all the old records, to make sure that I have not missed anything.

Although a little difficult to read, the above is the baptism record for John Michael Westhoff. He was baptised with the name Joannes Michael and he was recorded with the name Westoff, rather than Westhoff.

Baptism: Richard Boushell (1898-1900)

Richard Boushell is Dermot's great uncle and he was baptised on this day, 19 June 1898, which was a Sunday. Sadly Richard died in 1900, aged 1 year 8 months, the cause of his death was given as probably measles.
1st Page of Baptism Registration
2nd Page of Baptism Registration
The first page shows that Richard was born on 15 June and the second page gives the date of his baptism, 19 June. His parents were Richard Boushell and Ellen Byrne (Dermot's great grandparents) and the godparents are given as James Morrison and Esther Morrison.

This also is a good example of how one record can lead to another. I had not paid much attention to the godparents but decided to try and see if I could find out who they were, as I had not come across the name Morrison before.

Richard was baptised in 1898 in Naas, Co Kildare so I checked the 1901 census for this area and found a James and Esther Morrison living in Limerick Road, Naas, James' occupation is given as Quartermaster Sergeant Infantry.

I then looked for a marriage record for James Morrison and Esther and found that he had married Esther Byrne in Naas on 22 January 1895. His occupation is given as Sergeant Army. Esther was Ellen's younger sister.

Harold Hand, the other Executor died on 4 November 1902.

Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1900, but apart from this position he played no part in public life. He was seen as something of an altruistic monocrat, mixing great thoughtfulness and generosity towards his tenants and employees at his two seats - Calke Abbey in Derbyshire and Warslow-Longnor in Staffordshire - with a disarming degree of aloofness and arbitrary behaviour towards his own family.
