He was born on 5 February 1833 and the record gives alot of information and is readable. He was baptised in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Burslem, Staffordshire.

The transcription reads:
Valentine the son of Valentine Fells of Burslem in the Parish of Burslem in the County of Stafford, potter and of Lucy his wife, who was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Colclough was born on the fifth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Thirty Three. And was solemnly baptised with water, in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost on the Thirteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Thirty Three by me William Leach.

Valentine died in February 1833 and was buried 4 days after he was baptised in St John, Burslem, Staffordshire.

On the 1891 census Thomas and Bridget Timlin lived at 33 Shaws Alley, John and Mary Ann McNamara lived at 35 Shaws Alley. It would seem that Frances godparents were neighbours, rather than close family.

Frances never married and she died age 32 in March 1929.

52 Ancestors: Week 5 - In the Kitchen

I wasn't too sure where to go with this one? In the end, I decide to list a few favourite dishes and my memory of them.

Rock Cakes
I remember that Grandma (Brenda) nearly always had a rock cake in the pantry, Grandad (Eric) used to take them to work, he cycled every day and they carried well. I then married someone who loves them as well.

Potato Hash
Other wise know as "Tater Ash" put into the oven early in the day and a small amount of meat went a long way, we nearly always had this on bonfire night (5 November) as well. Served with pickled red cabbage or beetroot.

Gravy
Of course, not a complete dish in itself, but Grandma (Brenda)made really good gravy and this evolved into a saying we used when anything was really good of "Lovely gravy, just like soup".

Tinned Fruit and Bread
Yeuch, yeuch, I did not like this at all, but tinned fruit with evaporated milk was often served as "afters" for Sunday tea and if it was felt that you had not eaten enough it came with bread and butter as well.

Mince Pies
Mum always made these for Grandad's (William) birthday, which was 1 December. One of my favourite's, unless we went to a farmer friends and hers had really thick pastry and mincemeat which had been "diluted" with apple, not so good.

Oatcakes
We used to go to Leek for these and the man behind the counter always gave us some of the little ones, made with the drips. When we moved away, we couldn't get them, so I started making them. Always eaten with butter and syrup.

And what is my signature dish? Probably the last one I made, so it can change weekly and a love of baking inherited from Mum and Grandma.

Baptism: Elizabeth Baddaley (1828-????)

On this day, 3 February 1828, which was a Sunday, Elizabeth Baddaley, my 4th great aunt was baptised in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Burslem, Staffordshire.

I can follow Elizabeth up to the 1851 census, when she was living at home with her mother. She may have married Joseph Blaize, but at the moment, I cannot confirm this.

Baptism: Peter Byrne (1880-1965)

On this day, 27 January 1880, which was a Tuesday, Peter Byrne (1880-1965) was baptised in Naas, Kildare, Ireland. Peter is Dermot's 2nd great uncle and his parents, Thomas and Mary (Malone) Byrne are Dermot's 2nd great grandparents.

Peter was born on 18 January 1880 in Naas, the birth registration shows his father Thomas was a labourer. The baptism record below gives Peter's date of birth as 25 January.

Unfortunaetely, I cannot make out the address, the godparents are given as Matthew Duffy and Margaret Hearn, who as far as I can tell are not related.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 3 - Namesake

I checked both of our trees and nobody has names which are the same as ours. I therefore decided that I would use Ben, as both trees have Benjamin, which although not strictly the same is the longer version of the same name.

Benjamin Boushell (1800-????) - 4th great grandfather

Benjamin Boushell (1870-1952) - 3rd great uncle

Benjamin Goodwin (1810-1879) - 4th great grandfather

Benjamin Hassall (1840-1919) - 4th great uncle

This came as a surprise, as I thought there would be more, just 2 direct ancestors on each side of the tree.

On this day 20 January 1873, which was a Monday, Lucy Baddaley and William Hancock were married in Christ Church, Cobridge, Staffordshire.

Lucy Baddaley is my 3rd great aunt, her parents Peter and Mary (Fell) Baddaley are my 3rd great grandparents.

The information for William took a little sorting out, it is the first time I have seen a man's name on a marriage record with a different surname for the father, so I did a little investigating.

The transcription reads:
William Hancock, age 26, bachelor, potter, living in Cobridge. Father: John Siddons, labourer
Lucy Baddaley, age 20, spinster, potter, living in Cobridge. Father: Peter Baddaley, potter

William Hancock was born in about November 1845 to James and Sarah (Locker) Hancock.
Sarah (Locker) Hancock then married William Walker in 1852.
Sarah (Locker) (Hancock) then married John Siddons in 1869. On the 1871 census William Hancock is listed as step-son of John Siddons.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 2 - Family Legend

This is not an easy one, as far as I know, we do not have any notable criminals or such like in the family trees. This being the case, I decided to look at Isaac Wain (1850-1932), my 2nd great grandfather, a legend because he had 4 wives. This of course was because of necessity, rather than choice.

Isaac's first wife was Lydia Downes, who he married in 1873, age 23, Lydia was 21. She died 3 years later on 1 May 1876. They had no children.

Isaac was a shoemaker and a farmer, he married Mary Sigley in 1877, they were both 27 years old at the time. Mary had 5 children, John died when he was 6 months old on 9 October 1890 and Mary died 2 days later on 11 October 1890.

Isaac now has 4 young children to look after, William, 13, Matthew, 10, Richard, 7 and Isaac, 4.

Isaac's mother is no longer alive, and the 1891 census shows that his father was living with Isaac's sister Eliza, her husband and 2 sons, so probably no room for Isaac and his family to stay there.

In 1891, Isaac married Hannah Hulme, she is 37 and Isaac is 41, and they have 5 children. Hannah died in 1909.

Isaac marries again in 1911, Mary Broadhurst. Isaac is 61 and Mary is 46, the oldest of 9 children and a spinster.

Isaac died in May 1932 his 4th wife Mary outlived him, she died in August 1940.

On this day 8 January 1905, which was a Sunday, Joseph Boushell (1905-1960) Dermot's great uncle was baptised in Naas, Co Kildare, Ireland. He was born on 2 January 1905 to Richard and Ellen (Byrne) Boushell, Dermot's great grandparents.

This is a really nice baptism record, it gives alot of information.

The first page gives the following:
Joseph Boushell, born 2 January to Richard Boushell and Ellen Byrne, living at Sallins Road. The number 5 on the left hand side is the number in the register.

The second page shows 8 January as the baptism date and the godparents, Patrick Byrne, Ellen's brother and Esther Morrison, Ellen's sister, who married James Morrison.
Also added to the record at a later date are details of Joseph's marriage to Mary Cleary in (Cashel), Killenaule on 26 June 1945.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 1 - Beginnings

I read about this challenge last year from Amy Johnson Crow, but never got into it. 52 prompts each week during 2021 to write something about your ancestors or family.

I am not sure I will make it every week, but I am going to give it a go and hope that it adds more diversity to this blog.

"Beginnings" is the first prompt. So immediately I think, what was it that got me started on this journey, especially as family history didn't ever really interest me? But I have covered that before so what else does it mean for me and being a bullet list girl, here goes:
  • The start of a New Year
  • The first year that both Dermot and I are retired
  • Beginning to tidy up the Family Tree
  • Beginning to check my resources
  • Where do I begin? My usual thought as I sit down to research!
So that is all for now and I hope this challenge gives me some new ideas.
