Meaning of Dermot

Dermot

This is the Anglicised form of the Irish name Diarmaid, now also used elsewhere in the English-speaking world. In Irish legend, Diarmaid was the lover of GrĂ¡inne, who had been promised to the ageing hero Finn mac Cumhaill, leader of the Fianna. The lovers eloped, but were pursued for sixteen years by Finn; according to one version of the story, Diarmaid was eventually killed by a wild boar and GrĂ¡inne died of grief.
